ATEGO Rapid Restore

At ATEGO, we understand that backing up your data is of little value if you can’t recover your data in a convenient and reliable fashion. That’s one of the reasons we are not big fans of tape backup solutions.

With ATEGO there are a number of ways you can quickly restore the data you have backed up with us.

Local Restore

Local restoration is an option available to ATEGO subscribers for a very small additional fee.  It allows the system to keep one, or multiple generations, of your backed up data on the ATEGO DS-CLIENT server sitting in your office. That means if you accidentally delete a file or a database is corrupted, you can recover a copy at LAN speed from the backup sitting locally.

Of course, if your whole office is destroyed by fire, then the local backup will also be destroyed, so that’s why we have the options below.

Remote Restore

In some sense, this is the normal way that ATEGO subscribers will recover their data. You can use the self-service wizard to help you locate and select the files you want to restore from our backup infrastructure.  The data will then be sent to you in encrypted format over the Internet.  It won’t be decrypted until it arrives at your ATEGO DS-CLIENT with your private encryption key.  Don’t worry, if your ATEGO DS-CLIENT burned down with your office, we will help you rebuild a new one at your DR site.

Portable Disk Restore

If you have a lot of data that needs to be restored, then sending it over the Internet is not a good option because it will likely be too slow.  Instead, we can help you recover your data to a portable hard drive, where it will sit in encrypted format.  We can than physically transport it to your office or DR site where your ATEGO DS-CLIENT can decrypt it.  This option will usually be fast enough for most customers, but not all, that’s why we have the Rapid Restore option.

Rapid Restore

If local restore is not an option and portable disk restore is still too slow for you then we suggest you consider Rapid Restore.

Normally if you need to recover an application and data extremely quickly, the fastest option is mirroring or real-time replication, but these options can be expensive or impractical if we are talking about numerous machines or large volumes of data.  Doing a scheduled backup or CDP backup using ATEGO can allow you protect many servers and keep multiple generations of backups, in case the most recent source file and backup is corrupted.

If you production server crashes and you need to bring your DR server online as quickly as possible, you can arrange with us to have a virtual instance of your server sitting in our datacenter already pre-loaded with the applications and configuration that you need.  When a disaster happens we can pump the data directly from our storage servers at LAN speed to your virtual servers.  We will guide you through the short process of re-authenticating the ATEGO DS-CLIENT so that you can enter your private encryption key to decrypt the data.

If your production servers are already virtualized, we can back up your VMDK file to our storage infrastructure, and then in an emergency load your VMDK backups to pre-provisioned virtual machines in our datacenter. 

When you use Rapid Restore you have the advantage of quick recovery and the cost savings of a shared DR infrastructure.  If you rather not share your DR infrastructure, we can host your dedicated boxes or VMs.  See our section on Other DR Services.
